Lawrence University Library: Presidential Portraits

About this collection

In this collection you will find digital images of the official portraits of Lawrence University presidents, as well as biographical information about each president and portrait artist. Located in the Seeley G. Mudd Library, the portraits were commissioned to commemorate each president’s term of office. University records indicate that the artists of the portraits were selected from recommendations of trustees, friends of the University, and sometimes the president himself. Archival records also reveal that the portraits were financed through private contributions, not from the University’s regular budget.
