About Worcester Art Center

Constructed: 1950
Location: site of current Wriston Arts Center
Cost: $280,000
Destroyed: 1987

The Worcester Art Center was named for the Chicago couple, Charles and Mary Worcester, who donated $260,000 of the $280,000 building fund.

The Worcester Art Center, a broad, Lannon stone structure of what might be called "moderately contemporary" design, was officially opened Saturday particularly for the hundreds here to attend commencement. Its two galleries had 21 masterpieces on display. Work of both faculty and students was effectively shown. Physically, it was all tremendously impressive. (Milwaukee Journal, June 11, 1950)

Blond furniture and muted tones of blue, yellow and gray form the decorative scheme in the new Worcester Fine Art Center, which is now in use. The informal library has light wood paneled walls, a 20 foot sweep of floor-to-ceiling windows and furniture in chocolate brown and rosy rust. (The Lawrentian, Aprial 28, 1950)
