ART 311: The Figure in Studio Art
Professor Neilson
Spring 2005

The art I create challenges viewers to consider and question social issues. I am currently focusing on anti-violence themes. Images in this body of work reference war and hostility presenting raw information about these problems to evoke emotion in the viewer.

Here I am arguing against violence through representing a charred, burned woman, in which I used myself as the model. Her arms are shielding her from an attack, her head is thrown back, and her mouth is agape in pain and anger.

This piece was created in Professor Neilson's Figure in Art course. The assignment was to "Make a piece that uses the figure to make a political or social statement." The course is an exploration of the human form through empirical observation and creative exploration in 2D and 3D.

Kathie Kollwitz, Leon Golub, and Theresa Spadafora have influenced my work. Like these artists, I try to convey movement, urgency, and passion through my art. I create work out of personal necessity. I have the ability to address issues important to me through the use of visual language more fluidly and effectively than through the use of words or print. My goal is to strike a personal chord with the viewer while referencing current social issues. I create art with desire and passion in order to impact society.
