Artist's Statement:
This piece is based on the stage of the grief process that includes denial, despair, and fear. The figure stands with one foot forward and the rest of the body leaning back and balancing on the back foot, signifying a step back from things that frighten and engulf one; in this case, the death of a loved one. The despair is also visible through the position of the arms to the head, with one hand covering the face. Parts of the body are also burned; these pieces indicate wounds in the past. Another piece of the same subject that would follow would include another wound from the death that caused the figure's mourning.
