First Person

G. Paul Koning, '75

One of my strongest memories comes from the beginning. I came to Lawrence on a program for visiting foreign students, arriving by bus from New York City four days before the start of the term.

I got out at the Appleton bus station around 8:30 p.m. and looked around, wondering what to do now. Fortunately two other people also got off the bus, a middle-aged couple. I asked them if they could point me to an inexpensive hotel.

One of them said, "Well, there's the Conway, but that's not exactly inexpensive. What brings you to Appleton?"

I explained in a few words. They talked to each other for half a minute or so. Then the man turned to me and said, "I'm Professor [Thomas R.] Dale. I'm on the Lawrence faculty. We'd be happy to let you stay with us until the dormitory opens."

And that's what I did. They gave me a place to stay, things to eat, and a guided tour of the campus. It was the perfect introduction to Lawrence and a good example of the benefits of a small school in a quiet town.
