Honorary Degrees of Retiring Faculty

Carol J. Butts, Associate Professor, and Assistant University Librarian and University Archivist, 1993

"Carol Butts, Lawrence graduate, descendant of one of the earliest contributors to Lawrence University, daughter and granddaughter of Lawrence alumni, you represent the best of the college's traditions and values. As librarian and archivist for more than a quarter-century, you have brought order and efficiency to our documentary records. From your encyclopedic knowledge of Lawrence history, you have provided answers to those inside and outside the university who seek information about the institution's past. At times, as I know firsthand, you have often provided answers before there were questions, as in this instance: you and your fellow retirees Dorrit Friedlander and Mary Poulson have accumulated an even 100 years of service to the college. Downer alumnae praise you for preserving records and memorabilia transported from Milwaukee and for 'keeping the spirit of Downer alive' at Lawrence. Always on hand and available to alumni at reunions, you have also offered your gracious hospitality for more than a decade to Lawrence's many visitors as resident director of the Hulbert Guest House.

While we can continue to rely upon you as occasional archivist and hostess, we know you shall now be able to spend more time exploring the narrow canals of Britain, and on those coveted voyages we wish you Godspeed.

By the authority vested in me, I now confer upon you the honorary degree of Master of Arts, ad eundem, and admit you to its rights, its privileges, and its obligations."
