Honorary Degrees of Retiring Faculty
Roy P. Whitney, Vice President and Assistant to the President, The Institute of Paper Chemistry, 1979
"In this 50th Anniversary Year of the Institute of Paper Chemistry, it is fitting that we have this opportunity to honor you. Your contributions over the years have played a key role in shaping the character of the Institute.
As a young chemical engineer with a Ph.D. from M.I.T., you came to Appleton in 1947, eager to apply your skills in the laboratory and in the classroom. The challenges were many, but you were more than their equal. As a teacher, scholar, researcher and administrator, you set high standards for yourself and for those for whom you were responsible. Although others may have occasionally disappointed you, you never disappointed them. Your 20 years of leadership of the academic programs were characterized by a clear articulation of the unique educational philosophy of the Institute and a total dedication to the development and welfare of its students.
In recent years, you once again demonstrated your commitment to your profession by assuming new responsibilities in areas which were vital to the achievement of the long range goals of the Institute. Your devotion to the principles upon which the Institute was founded was always apparent as you helped to chart a new course toward the future.
This same kind of devotion was evident in your considerable service to the community. You gave of your precious time generously, and we are all the better for it.
Your accomplishments as an engineer and an educator are many and lasting. Many also are your colleagues, your students, and your friends whose respect and affection for you are truly lasting.
By the authority vested in me, I now confer upon you the degree of Master of Science, ad eundem, and admit you to its rights, its privileges, and its obligations."
