Honorary Degrees of Retiring Faculty
Sidney Pullman Goodrich, Visiting Professor of Classics, 1978
"Sidney Pullman Goodrich, you have professed the classical languages with integrity and commitment for almost half a century. Your career as Professor and Chairman of Classics at Ripon College was especially distinguished, and in 1963 you were cited by the Greek government for the furtherance of Greek Studies in the United States. On three separate occasions following your retirement from Ripon in 1972 you graciously accepted invitations to serve Lawrence University as Visiting Professor of Classics, and your contributions have enriched our community immensely. We are grateful.
Wit and wisdom abound in your classroom, and you share, willingly and without affectation, your love of learning and your zest for life. Veritas and humanitas characterize your teaching, and it is simply in the nature of things, as Lucretius might have put it, that your students here at Lawrence came so quickly to respect and love you.
As a scholar you have both created and transmitted knowledge, and as a teacher you have fostered an enlightened approach to life, to the self, and to matters of intellect. Your career has been predicated on excellence, and it is for excellence that we honor you today.
By the authority vested in me, I now confer upon you the degree of Master of Arts, ad eundem, and admit you to its rights, its privileges, and its obligations."
