Assistive Technologies and Services for Library Users

The technologies and services listed here are of special interest to library users with disabilities. This is not all there is; see a reference librarian for other ways we can help.

Parking

The best place to park for those visiting the Seeley G. Mudd Library is the accessible parking spaces just east of the Lawrence Memorial Chapel.

A parking map and a page listing wheelchair access to other buildings on campus are available on the Disability Services web site.

Accessibility

The main floor of the Mudd Library is accessible. However, some of the book stacks and other areas are currently not accessible. Please ask library staff for assistance if you need materials from these areas. There is an accessible telephone in the lobby.

Help using the Library

Reference service is available to assist you in finding the materials and information you need. However, the reference hours may not be as long as the regular library hours. Telephone reference is available at 832-6752 or by e-mail at reference@lawrence.edu (these services are also subject to Reference opening hours).

Retrieving Materials

The circulation staff will retrieve materials (books or journals) from the stacks. If staffing permits, this may be done immediately. If it cannot be done immediately the materials will be held for you at the Circulation Desk. If you call or e-mail ahead to the library with the titles and call numbers of the books you need they will be waiting for you when you come in. (Note that e-mail may not be checked weekends or evenings.)

A print form for requesting assistive services is available at the circulation desk.

Online Catalog

Accessible computer terminals are located in front of the circulation desk. The online catalog and many databases are on the Web, so they may be accessed from any computer on campus with Netscape or Internet Explorer. Also see the Assistive Technology section of this web page.

Renewal

Books can be renewed online from the Check your library account page. You must enter your library card number (on the front of your Lawrence ID card) to access this feature.

Reserves

Many course reserves (reading and listening) are available on the Web (/oncampus/library/ereserves/courses.shtml) If you need extra time to use books or articles which are on reserve in the library, ask for an extended loan when you check out the material.

Journal Articles

Many journal articles are available full text on the Web via databases such as Expanded Academic Index, EbscoHost, JSTOR, and Project Muse. See the Library's Electronic Resources page (/library/research/elecres.shtml) for more.

Freshman Studies resources

Many books on the Freshman Studies reading list are available on tape and many recent Freshman Studies lectures are available on tape or on the web.

Copiers

If you have difficulty using the photocopy machines the library staff will make photocopies of articles for you. Ask at the Circulation Desk.

Microforms

The microfiche and microfilm readers are equipped with zoom lens. Please ask the staff for assistance if you have difficulty viewing or making copies of microforms.

Assistive Technology

Users who would like training in using the library's specially-designed equipment should contact the Reference staff at 832-6752 or reference@lawrence.edu to schedule an appointment. However, no appointment is necessary to use the equipment.

The following adaptive technology is available:

Screen-enlarging computer station with Zoomtext and large monitor is available in front of the Circulation Desk. Several enlargement settings are available.

Please contact the library director, 832-7353, with any questions.
