Registration on the Lawrence University Network is necessary in order to access the Internet, printers and shared document folders across campus. Students should follow this guide sequentially to successfully register a personal computer.

STEP 1: Wireless Connection

There are several secure wireless local area networks (WLAN) identified on campus. Student personal devices connect to the LUwireless network. Other wireless access points are NOT permitted on the Lawrence network as they can interfere with the Lawrence wireless network.

Please contact the Helpdesk at 920-832-6570 or stop by the Helpdesk, in Library Room 201, if you have difficulty connecting wirelessly.

Windows 7

Click on the wireless connection icon on the bottom-right corner of your screen, select “LUwireless” and then click Connect.
When prompted, enter VIKING\your Lawrence username in the “Username” field.
Enter your Lawrence email password in the “Password” field and click OK. (If you get the login prompt again, you might have to input your information again.)
Click on Connect when prompted.

Windows Vista

Go to Start - Connect to.
Select “LUwireless” and then click Connect at the bottom right.
When prompted, click Enter/select additional log on information.
When prompted, enter your Lawrence username in the “User name:” field.
Enter your Lawrence email password in the “Password:” field.
Enter VIKING in the Logon domain: field.
Click on OK. Click OK on the “Validate Server Certificate” window.
After a few seconds, you should get a screen that says you have successfully connected. You can check the boxes next to “Save this network” and “Start this connection automatically” if they are not’t already checked.
Click Close.

Note: You will not have full internet access until you complete the rest of the process below.

STEP 2: UPDATE OR INSTALL ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE

All computers must have current anti-virus software installed in order to register on the Lawrence University Network. Download any updates available for your anti-virus software. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to anti-virus updates.)

If you currently do not have anti-virus software, or if your subscription has expired, LU provides Kaspersky at no cost to students.

To download Kaspersky anti-virus, first completely uninstall any other anti-virus software components including live updates and registry folders – an essential step in order to properly install the new software. Once files are uninstalled do the following:

Open an Internet Browser (such as Internet Explorer – recommended – or Firefox).
A security page will appear. If using Internet Explorer, click Continue to this Website (not recommended). If using Firefox, click Add an Exception. Click Get certificate. Click Confirm security exception.
On the Lawrence Network page, under Step 2, click on “Information Technology Services provides anti-virus software” and follow the instructions to download and install Kaspersky.

Note: If using Internet Explorer 9, when trying to download, a popup appears at the bottom of the page, click Save. Go to the Start Menu, click Computer then Downloads on left hand-side. Double-click Kaspersky from the Downloads folder.

STEP 3: UPDATE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM

All computers must have current operating system software in order to register on the LU Network. Please follow these steps to ensure your operating system has the latest software updates. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to operating system updates.)

Go to Start – All Programs – Windows Update.
In the left pane, click Check for updates and wait while Windows searches for updates.
If any updates are found, click Install Updates. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password and provide confirmation.
Repeat 1-3 until you are advised that No more updates are available.

STEP 4: NETWORK REGISTRATION

Open an Internet Browser (such as Internet Explorer – recommended – or Firefox).
A security page will appear. If using Internet Explorer, click "Continue to this Website (not recommended)". If using Firefox, click Add an Exception. Click Get certificate. Click Confirm security exception.
A Lawrence University Network introduction page will appear. After you have read the information on the page, click Continue.
Select the first link
A Lawrence Terms and Agreement page will appear. You must read and agree to the terms by clicking I Agree in order to continue with your computer registration.
Select wireless laptop for the type of connection. Enter your Username and Password* and click Download.
A download window will appear. Choose to save the file to your Desktop and click Save.
- Note: If using Internet Explorer 9, when trying to download, a popup appears at the bottom of the page, click Save. Go to the Start Menu, click Computer then click Downloads on left hand-side. Double-click Bradford Dissolvable Agent from the Downloads folder.
From the Desktop locate and run the Bradford Dissolvable Agent file.
If any pop-up messages appear, click Continue.
Your computer will be scanned for required software by Bradford. Once the scan is complete, either a success page or a failure page will appear. If the failure page appears, click on the link to see how to resolve the failure. If the success page appears, you have successfully completed registration.

Note: If your computer is found to be interfering with the LU Network or spreading viruses, it will be disconnected from the network until the problem is resolved. Contact the Helpdesk for assistance.

CONNECT TO YOUR PERSONAL NETWORK SPACE

Double-click the Computer icon on your desktop (or in the Start menu) to open.
From the top, click Map Network Drive.
Select drive P: In the folder field, type: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\student\username (substitute your LU username).
Check the box "Reconnect at Logon".
Select "Connect using different credentials" and click Finish.
In the username field, type: Viking\username (substitute your LU username).
In the password field, enter your network password. Click OK. Click Finish.

To reconnect after your computer is restarted:

Double-click on Computer.
Double-click the drive you just mapped.
At the password prompt, enter your network password.

Technology Services strongly recommends that you save your documents to your network folder. Why? If something should happen to your computer, your documents will be backed up on our server and accessible from any campus computer.

CONNECT TO CAMPUS SHARE (CLASS SHARE)

Double-click the Computer icon on your desktop (or in the Start menu) to open.
From the top, click Map Network Drive.
Select drive U: In the folder field, type: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\campus_share
Check the box "Reconnect at Logon".
Select "Connect using different credentials" and click Finish.
In the user name field, type: Viking\username (substitute your LU username). In the password field, enter your network password. Click OK. Click Finish.

To reconnect after your computer is restarted:

Double-click Computer.
Double-click the drive you just mapped.
At the password prompt, enter your network password.

CONNECT TO CAMPUS LAB PRINTERS

To connect to a LU printer, you must first log in to your personal network space or campus share (see above). Once logged in:

Go to Start – Devices and Printers.
From the top, click Add a Printer.
In Printer Wizard, click Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer.
Select The printer that I want isn't’t listed.
Choose Select a shared printer by name. In the Name box, type \\curtis.lawrence.edu\ . A list of printers should appear. Choose \\curtis.lawrence.edu\library_public_2nd

If a list does not appear, type the printer name: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\library_public_2nd.

Click Ok at windows download prompt
This adds all the public printers automatically including the printer in your residence hall. Documents sit at the printer for 15 minutes. You will need to release your job from the print release station in order to actually print your document.
Click Next.
Choose if you want this printer to be your default printer or not. Click Next.
Click Finish.

Note: Anytime you want to print from your computer, you must first be logged into your personal network space or campus share.

ACCESS YOUR LU E-MAIL

Open an Internet browser and go to http://webmail.lawrence.edu
Log in with your username and network password.
