Registration Instructions

Registration on the Lawrence University Network is necessary in order to access the Internet, printers and shared document folders across campus. Follow this guide sequentially to successfully register your personal computer.

STEP 1: Wireless Connection

There are several secure wireless local area networks (WLAN) on campus. Student devices connect to the LUwireless network.

Windows 8 Touch

  1. In Start – Swipe right to left  and tap on Settings
  2. Tap on the Wireless Icon.
  3. Select LUwireless and tap on the Connect button.
  4. Username and Password field will pop-up. Enter your Lawrence username in the Username field. In the Password field enter you Lawrence password.
  5. You will get a Windows can’t verify the server’s Identity message. Tap on the Connect button.

Note: you will not have full internet access until you complete the rest of the process below.

STEP 2: Update AntiVirus

All Windows 8 computers come with Windows Defender, which is a free antivirus.

Note: If you have another antivirus installed you will need to update that Antivirus’ definitions or uninstall it and activate Windows Defender in Action Center.

Note: LU provided Antivirus will not work with Windows 8.

  1. In Start – Swipe up from the bottom and tap All apps
  2. Scroll to the right and Tap on Windows Defender.
  3. Windows Defender will open. Select the Update tab and tap on Update.

STEP 3: Update Your Operating System

All computers must have current operating system software in order to register on the LU Network. Follow these steps to ensure your operating system has the latest software updates. (Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to operating system updates.)

  1. In Start – Swipe right to left and tap on Settings.
  2. Tap on Change PC settings
  3. Select Windows Update
  4. You will need to plug in your device for these updates.
  5. On the right side of the screen tap on Check for updates now
  6. Tap on the purple text and select Install.
  7. The computer may reboot after updates are complete. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until a message comes up saying there are no more updates.

STEP 4: Network Registration

  1. From Desktop open an internet Browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
  2. A security page should appear (if it doesn't try going to a website such as cnn.com).  If using Internet Explorer or Edge, tap Continue to this Website (Not Recommended).  If using Firefox/Chrome, tap ADD and Exception. Click Get certificate.  Click Confirm Security exception.
  3. A Lawrence University Network Device Registration page will appear. After you have read the -Acceptable Use Policy click Agree to continue.
  4. Select the link "student personal device registration". Enter your Username and Password, Select appropriate device for the type of connection and click Download.
  5. A download window will appear. Click Run
  6. A Windows User Account Control prompt will appear. Click Yes.

Your computer will be scanned for required software by the Bradford agent. Once the scan is complete, either a success/failure page will appear. if the failure page appears, read the message carefully. It will tell you either your Operating System has more updates or your antivirus has more updates.

Connect to Your Personal and Campus Share Spaces

STEP 5: Connect to your Personal Network Space

  1. Select Desktop – go to the bottom of your screen and tap on the folder icon.
  2. On the left of the window, select Computer.
  3. On the top on the window, tap Computer then Map Network Drive.
  4. Select drive P: In the folder field, type: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\student\username (substitute your LU username).
  5. Check the box Reconnect at Logon.
  6. Select Connect using different credentials and tap Finish.
  7. In the username field, type: viking\username (substitute your LU username).
  8. In the password field, enter your Lawrence password. Tap OK. Tap Finish.
    Note: This \\curtis.lawrence.edu\student\username folder is the location where you will save your documents.  When you log in to a campus computer, this folder is called My Documents.
     

STEP 6: Connect to Campus Share (class share)

  1. From Desktop – go to the bottom of your screen and tap on the folder icon.
  2. On the left of the window, select Computer .
  3. On the top on the window, tap Computer  then Map Network Drive.
  4. Select drive U: In the folder field, type: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\campus_share
  5. Check the box Reconnect at Logon.
  6. Select Connect using different credentials. Tap Finish.
  7. In the username field, type: viking\username (substitute your LU username).
  8. In the password field, enter your Lawrence password. Tap OK. Tap Finish.


To reconnect after your computer is restarted:

  1. From Desktop – go to the bottom of your screen and tap on the folder icon.
  2. In the left of the window, select Computer.
  3. Double-tap the drive you just mapped.
  4. At the password prompt, enter your Lawrence password.

Connect to Campus Printers

To connect to a LU printer, you must first log in to your personal network space or campus share (see above). Once logged in: 

  1. In Start – Swipe right to left  and tap on Settings
  2. Tap on Control Panel.
  3. Under Hardware and Sound select View devices and printers.
  4. At the top of window Tap add a printer
  5. In Printer Wizard, select The printer that I want isn’t listed.
  6. Choose Select a shared printer by name.
  7. In the text box, type \\curtis.lawrence.edu\. A list of printers should appear. Choose the \\curtis.lawrence.edu\lawrence_printers. If a list does not appear, type the printer name: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\lawrence_printers.
  8. Tap Next
  9. Tap OK at the windows download prompt
    Note: The above steps add all the public printers automatically including the printer in your residence hall. Documents sit at the printer for 15 minutes. You will need to release your job from the print release station in order to actually print your document.
  10. Tap Next.
  11. Choose if you want this printer to be your default printer or not. Tap Next. Tap Finish.
  12. At the prompt tap to print a test page and then verify at the printer.

Note: Anytime you want to print you must first be logged into your personal network space or campus share.
