Personal Device Registration Guides for Faculty & Staff

Windows 7 Instructions

  1. Click on the wireless connection icon on the bottom-right corner of your screen, select LUfacstaffpersonal and then click Connect.
  2. When prompted, enter VIKING\your Lawrence username in the “Username” field.
  3. Enter your Lawrence email password in the “Password” field and click OK. (If you get the login prompt again, you might have to put your information again.)
  4. Click on Connect when prompted.

Note you will not have full internet access until you complete the rest of the process below.

STEP 1:  Update or Install Security & Antivirus Software

All computers must have current security & antivirus software installed in order to register on the Lawrence University Network. If you have security & Antivirus software installed you will need to download any updates available for this software.

(Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to antivirus updates.)

If you currently do not have antivirus software, or if your subscription has expired, you will need to either install one of tthe free options or purchase a new subscription.  For more information about available options and instructions see the Security and Anti-virus software page.

STEP 2:  Update Your Operating System

All computers must have current operating system software in order to register on the LU Network. Follow these steps to ensure your operating system has the latest software updates.

(Note: Although you will not have access to the majority of the Internet until your computer is registered, you WILL have access to operating system updates.)

  1. Go to Start – All Programs – Windows Update.
  2. In the left pane, click Check for updates. Wait while Windows searches for updates.
  3. If any updates are found, click Install Updates. Note, only critical and important updates are needed. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password and provide confirmation.
  4. Repeat 1-3 until you are advised that "No more updates are available".


STEP 3:  Network Registration

  1. Open an Internet Browser (such as Internet Explorer – recommended – or Firefox).
  2. A security page will appear. If using Internet Explorer, click "Continue to this Website (not recommended)". If using Firefox, click Add an Exception. Click Get certificate. Click Confirm security exception.
  3. A Lawrence University Network introduction page will appear. After you have read the information on the page, click Continue.
  4. Select the last link.
  5. A Lawrence Terms and Agreement page will appear. You must read and agree to the terms by clicking I Agree in order to continue with your computer registration.
  6. Select wireless laptop for the type of connection. Enter your Username and Password* and click Download.
  7. A download window will appear. Choose to save the file to your Desktop and click Save.


Note: If using Internet Explorer 9, when trying to download, a popup appears at the bottom of the page, click Save.  Go to the  Start Menu , click Computer then click Downloads on left hand-side. Double-click Bradford Dissolvable Agent from the Downloads folder. From the Desktop locate and run the Bradford Dissolvable Agent file. If any pop-up messages appear, click Continue.

Your computer will be scanned for required software by Bradford. Once the scan is complete, either a success page or a failure page will appear. If the failure page appears, click on the link to see how to resolve the failure. If the success page appears, you have successfully completed registration.

Note:  If your computer is found to be interfering with the LU Network or spreading viruses, it will be disconnected from the network until the problem is resolved. Contact the Helpdesk for assistance.

Step 4: Connecting to Network Spaces

  1. Double-click the Computer icon on your desktop (or in the Start menu) to open.
  2. From the top, click Map Network Drive.
  3. Select the appropriate drive letter for the different network spaces.
  • Personal\Department share, select Drive X. In the folder field,
    type: \\elda.lawrence.edu\department acronym\  From here you will be able to access your personal or department share.
  • Campus Share, select Drive U. In the folder field, type: \\curtis.lawrence.edu\campus_share
  1. Check the box Reconnect at Logon.
  2. Select Connect using different credentials and click Finish.
  3. In the username field, type: viking\username (substitute your LU username).
  4. In the password field, enter your network password. Click OK. Click Finish.

To reconnect after your computer is restarted:

  1. Double-click on Computer.
  2. Double-click the drive letter you just mapped.
  3. At the password prompt, enter your network password.

Windows Vista Instructions

  1. Click on the Start Button and select Control Panel.
  2. Under Network and Internet, select View network status and tasks.
  3. Under the Tasks menu on the left, select Manage wireless networks.
  4. In the Manage Wireless Networks window, click Add.
  5. Under How do you want to add a network, click Manually create a network profile.
  6. Under Enter information for the wireless network you want to add, type or select the following information:
  • Network name:  type LUfacstaffpersonal
  • Security type:  select WPA-Enterprise
  • Encryption type:  select TKIP
  1. Click Next.
  2. Under Successfully added LUfacstaffpersonal, click Change connection settings.
  3. Under the Connection tab, uncheck Connect automatically when this network is in range.  Then click on the Security tab.
  4. Under the Security tab, uncheck cache user information for subsequent connection to this network. Then click the Settings… button.
  5. Uncheck Enable Fast Reconnect. Then click the Configure… button.
  6. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any). Then click OK.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Under Successfully added LUfacstaffpersonal , click Connect to…
  10. Under Select a network to connect to, click LUfacstaffpersonal. Then click Connect.
  11. Under Additional log on information is required to connect to this network, click on Enter/select additional log on information.
  12. Enter your credentials. Type your username and password in the corresponding fields.  In the Logon domain: field type VIKING.
  13. Under Connecting to Lufacstaffpersonal window, wait for the connection to complete.
  14. Under Additional log on information is required to connect to this network, click on Enter/select additional Log on information.
  15. Click OK. Your wireless connection should now be complete.

Mac OSX Instructions

  1. Turn on the built-in wireless adapter/WiFi by clicking the WiFi icon in the upper right corner of the screen and selecting Turn WiFi On.
  2. Then select the LUfacstaffpersonal network from the same WiFi  credential menu.
  3. Authenticate by entering your Lawrence network username and password. Click OK.
  4. Verify the certificate and click Continue. Your wireless connection should now be complete.

Note: If not connecting automatically to the wireless network, turn off the WiFi and then turn it back on.

STEP 2: Update Your Operating System

  1. Click Apple – About this Mac.
  2. Click Software Update. Wait while Apple checks for updates for your computer.
  3. Run available updates.

  1. Open an Internet Browser (Safari is preferred).
  2. A security page will appear. Click Continue to this Website or Yes to proceed.
  3. A Lawrence University Network introduction page will appear. Read and click Continue.
  4. Select the last link.
  5. A Lawrence Terms and Agreement page will appear. Read and click I Agree.
  6. Select Wireless Laptop from the drop down menu. Enter your Username and Password and click Download.
  7. A download window will appear. Choose to save the file to your Desktop and click Save.
  8. From your desktop, locate and run the Bradford Dissolvable Agent file.
  9. If a message appears, select Continue.
  10. Your computer will be scanned for required software by Bradford. Once the scan is complete, either a success page or a failure page will appear. If the failure page appears, click on the link to see how to resolve the failure. If the success page appears, you have successfully completed registration. Reboot your computer.

Note: If your computer is found to be interfering with the LU Network or spreading viruses, it will be disconnected from the network until the problem is resolved. Contact the Helpdesk for assistance.

STEP 5: Connecting to Network Spaces

  1. In the Finder, select the Go menu and Connect to Server.
  2. In the address field, type one of the following:
  • Personal Network space AND Department share: smb://elda.lawrence.edu/your department acronym/
  • Campus Share: smb://curtis.lawrence.edu/campus_share
  1. Click the plus button. Then click Connect.
  2. Enter your LU Network username and password at the prompt.
  3. Click your own user folder from the list and select File – Add to Sidebar.
  4. To reconnect in the future, click your user folder in the Sidebar.

Please remember to close files and eject the network drives before putting your computer to sleep or you may corrupt your files.

Mobile Devices: Wireless Instructions

Note - you must repeat the below step for each mobile device you wish to use on the LUwireless wireless network.

  1. From your personal device, turn on the Wireless connection.   You should be presented with a list of wireless networks in your area.  Every device is different on exactly how to turn on the wireless connection.  On Apple iOS devices go to the Settings application.
  2. From the list of available networks select the LUFACSTAFFPERSONAL network.
  3. Once connected to the LUwireless network you will be prompted for a username and password.  Enter your network/email username and password.  Depending on your device you may also get a certificate warning message.  You must accept this certificate to continue.
  4. On an Android-based device make sure to select PEAP for the EAP method and MSCHAPV2 for the phase 2 authentication.
  5. Once the connection to the LUwireless network has been made, start an internet browser to complete the registration process.   This will likely be Safari on the Apple iOS devices or Internet Explorer on Windows devices.
  6. In the browser go to www.lawrence.edu.  Select Continue at the security prompt. Instead of getting the desired site you will be redirected to the Lawrence University Network Registration page. Click Continue at the bottom of the software piracy page.
  7. Phones or other personal devices will not require anti-virus software.  Click Continue at the bottom of the registration page.
  8. On the Select Options page click on the top (student) link to continue.
  9. The registration and security agent application screen will appear.   Select your device type (either Smartphone or Other) from the drop down list box.  Enter your network/email username and password and click the Download button to register.
  10. Depending on your device,  you may or may not get a successfully registered message.  This message will NOT appear for some devices.
  11. You must reboot your device.  You should then be able to access the internet on your personal device using the LUwireless wireless network.

 

Note: Remember that Lawrence currently has wireless service in academic buildings and in residence halls.  We do not yet have coverage outdoors or in some administrative buildings.
