The Fox River runs through the heart of Appleton. The Fox River is unusual in that it flows north for its entire course. It exits into Lake Michigan at Green Bay about 30 miles to the north of Appleton.

Appleton is the largest of the “Fox Cities”, a cluster of 18 cities, villages and towns along the Fox River. Communities along the Fox River include: Appleton, Neenah, Menasha, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Combined Locks, Town of Grand Chute, Little Chute, Freedom, Town of Neenah, Town of Menasha, Town of Vandenbroek, Darboy, Town of Buchanan, and Town of Harrison. The Fox Cities have a combined population of more than 220,000 people.
