Sections
Several of our
pieces call for straight mutes (as do many pieces of band and jazz band music). A straight mute is part of the trumpet
player’s standard equipment. If you
don’t have one, please either purchase one or ask your band director if you
might borrow one from your school. The
red and white Humes & Berg Stone Lined mute is fine and costs around
$30-$40. If you want to get a better
mute, the aluminum Jo-Ral or Vacchiano mute costs about $40-$50. The metal mute sounds and plays better, but
dents easily if dropped. Whatever you
get, be sure your name is on the mute.
Percussion Section
The only items that
you need to bring to rehearsals are your sticks and mallets. If you do not have all the mallets required
for your parts, we can supply some, but every percussionist should begin to
acquire his/her own set of mallets. Be
sure your name is on each stick/mallet so it can be identified! A bag for your mallets is also suggested
because it makes it easier for you to keep track of them. Be sure your name is on the bag as well. Here is a suggested start for a set of
drumsticks and mallets:
- medium size drumsticks (2B, 5B, or Vic Firth SD1 General; light
drumsticks are usually not used for concert playing)
- hard plastic (phenolic) bell/xylo mallets (Musser M215 or Balter MB10)
- soft yarn marimba/sus cym mallets (Musser M208 or Balter MB15)
- general purpose timpani mallets (Vic Firth T1 General)
