There were 14 of us at the first meeting of isolated statisticians,
which was held at 10:00 on Sunday morning of JSM. (Historical note:
6 had
internet email, 5 had only bitnet, a few didn't know their email addresses
by memory.)
We discussed how to deal with local politics within departments of
mathematics (e.g., to statisticians consulting is highly valued work, but
mathematicians often don't understand this). We also discussed
accreditation of undergraduate programs.
A third topic was the possible creation of a newsletter for the Section
on Statistical Education and what kinds of articles might appear
in such a
publication.
