Math 117 Computer Lab Assignment – One-variable Graphics and Numerical Summaries

(Due at the beginning of lab next week – 1/18 or 1/20)

Consider the data in the CountryData.sav file (in lab, you should have copied this file to your account). These data, taken from U.N.E.S.C.O. 1990 Demographic Year Book and The Annual Register 1992 (data for 1990), include birth rates, death rates, life expectancies, and Gross National Products for 97 countries. The variables are defined as follows:

birth rate: number of live births per 1,000 population size

death rate: number of deaths per 1,000 population size

infant death rate: number of infant deaths per 1,000 of population under 1 year old

male life expectancy: life expectancy (in years) at birth for males

female life expectancy: life expectancy (in years) at birth for females

GNP per capita: Gross National Product per capita (in U.S. dollars)

Country group: 1 = Eastern Europe

                2 = South America and Mexico

                3 = Western Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand

                4 = Middle East

                5 = Asia

                6 = Africa

country: country

Using SPSS to aid your analysis (don’t do these by hand), answer the following questions (be sure to include units with your numerical answers):

  1. Is the distribution of GNP per capita approximately symmetric, skewed left, or skewed right? (Turn in a well-labeled graph to support your claim.)

  1. Determine numerical summaries (5-number summary, mean, and standard deviation) for the GNP per capita variable (you do not need to print out this SPSS output). Give one example (specific numerical comparison) of how these numerical summaries support your answer to question 1.

  1. Which country group has the largest number of countries included in this data set? Give both the country group (worded description, not number category) and the number of countries included.

__________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. Create separate boxplots of female life expectancy by the country group (you do not need to turn in these graphs). Use these boxplots to answer the next two questions:
    1. As measured by the interquartile range, which of these country groups has the largest spread in female life expectancies? (Give the worded description of the country group, not the number associated with it.)

____________________________________________________________________________________

    1. Within the country group of the Middle East, does the boxplot flag any suspected outliers? If so, what country (or countries) is (are) the outlier(s)? Also, what is (are) the value(s) of female life expectancy for this (these) country (countries)?

  1. Which country group has the largest median birth rate? (Give the worded description of the country group, not the number associated with it.)

__________________________________________________________________________________________

What is the value of median birth rate for this country group?
