Introduction to Phonetics
LING 375
Terry Gottfried
Phonetics is an important part of
linguistic scholarship that connects a number of disciplines (physics,
physiology, psychology, computer science) in the study of linguistic
phenomena. It is a less abstract, less formal, and more empirical
study of language than, e.g., syntax and phonology, but important for
the discipline in the theories derived from its study (e.g., role of
speech in language development and origins) and in its practical
applications to artificial intelligence, speech pathology, and second
language acquisition. Course will be taught as
lecture/demonstration with some laboratory exercises.
