Topics for the Second Midterm

The second midterm exam will cover chapters 5, 6, and 7. Just as in the first exam the problems will be a mix of theory and applications.

Here is a list of topics for the exam:

• Gauss elimination
• Partial pivoting and scaled partial pivoting
• Computing matrix inverses and determinants by Gauss elimination
• LU factorization
• Euler's method
• Taylor methods (including error estimates)
• Runge-Kutta method
• Systems and higher order DEs
• Jacobi, Gauss-Seidel, and SOR methods
• Gradient descent
• Condition numbers

Once again I will allow you to bring a single page of notes to the exam.
