The first midterm exam will cover chapters 2, 3, and 4. The exam will concentrate mostly on concepts, although I may also ask some problems that ask you to do simple calculations by hand. For each of the items below you should be prepared to explain the concept. In the case of theorems and definitions, you should be prepared to write out a statement of the theorem or definition. For methods you should be prepared to give an outline of the method or work through a simple example.
Since this material involves a lot of formulas, I will allow you to bring a one page sheet of notes to the exam. You should use this page to write down any formulas that are too complex to memorize.
