Kathryn (Kate) Nelson Phone: (262) 844-9297 My name is Kathryn Nelson and I will be graduating from Lawrence University in June of 2006 with majors in Music Education and Trombone Performance. My area of certification will be Instrumental Music Education K-12, #506 per the State of Wisconsin. I am a natural leader and I have always loved working with people, specifically children, and I know this largely due to my experience as a summer camp counselor and volunteer at Phantom Lake YMCA Camp for the past five years. Though I had to remain at a consistently high energy level, and I was not able to get very much sleep, I loved working at camp because I was given the sincere privilege of impacting the lives of children and watching them grow. This concurrently has given me an undying faith in the essential good nature of children and teenagers, which helps to give me perspective and keep my outlook positive. I plan to increase the quality of music education at my school so that my band program will be a resource for creative and artistic learning for my students as well as one of the highlights of my district. I will achieve this through setting high expectations of my students within a student-centered environment. The music education teaching theory I researched and studied at Lawrence, and which I plan to primarily use, is entitled “Comprehensive Musicianship Through Performance”. This method of music education is based upon the national music standards and it encourages the integration of quality repertoire, strong instructional practices and meaningful assessment of students' musical learning. In addition to performing music that is being written for bands and chamber ensembles today I also plan to write and arrange music for the various ensembles and individual players at my school. Through the different composition classes and lessons that I have taken at Lawrence I have learned how to effectively compose and arrange music and I will therefore be able to customize music for my students and to create original music for them.
