Leech Gallery: Depression Era American Art
Hoffmaster Gallery: Tony Conrad, paintings
Conrad’s paintings deal with cultural identity, specifically Northern Wisconsin and hunting culture. Decorative pattern and familiar local imagery combine to create inviting, high-volume images while subversively including elements of contradiction. The result is a complex image that is both a critique of the decadent nature of American culture and a representation of cross-cultural references.
Kohler Gallery: Julia Barello, installation
Barello creates large-scale installations constructed from recycled MRI and X-ray scans. From these discarded medical images, whose original purpose was to convey information about the human body, Barello cuts out forms inspired by natural elements.
