Portrait of Erich Heckel 1919
Along with his monumental religious paintings, Nauen became in the 1920s a master of portrait prints. His favored technique was etching, whereby he could create a hard, somewhat pointed line. This method also allowed him to convey an incisive characterization of the individual portrayed- in this case, his good friend and fellow artist Erich Heckel.
