Around 1912, Jawlensky was particularly fascinated with applying his aesthetic to the female nude. This study is a characteristic example of Jawlensky’s method of cross-hatching very bold and simple lines. The model is probably Helene Nesnakomoff, who later became his wife. Central to Jawlensky’s concerns was the desire to capture the spiritual essence of life though a minimum of form.
