Hasenfratz probably completed this painting during his stay in southern France. The style indicates his knowledge of Picasso’s Cubism, as well as a sense of Expressionist color contrasts. Since Pohl studied with Seewalk at the Kolner Werkschulen from 1927 to 1929- that is, attended the school- it is possible that she purchased the work directly from the artist or that her personal acquaintance with him prompted her to buy the painting.
