A woodblock print based on a quick brush stroke drawing executed in a cursive manner. This print was probably included as a model design in a painting manual for students.
Ink and watercolor on paper. Seiobo accompanied by two attendants carrying the queen's peaches and a fan. The painting alludes to the famous Chinese legend in which Seiobo offered immortality for three thousand years to a person who would eat a peach.

Chiyogami (Japanese Paper with Gay-colored Design): Chiyogami is used to decorate handicrafts such as purses, paper dolls, boxes etc. The example is color woodcut of scattering designs in connection with the New Year; lobster, battledore and shattlecock, thread hand-ball, fan, tsuzumi (hand drum), nandin, fern and paper strips for ceremonial offerings. This was probably made by the Edo Souvenir Chiyogami Association and was distributed by Isetatsu, Tokyo, in the 1900s.

A brush drawing study in ink and color on paper. A shojo is a mythical red-haired man who is inordinately fond of sake. The shojo holds a cup and a dipper; he is intoxicated and dances near a huge jar.
Instructive notes: "face - use light reddish color on the reverse side of the paper and apply adjustive shading on the front surface; hand - depict the same way; hat - draw a dark outline and apply shading as shown in the picture."

Kanzan and Jittoku (Harn-shan and Shih-te) are favorite figures in Zen folklore. A broom to sweep away the cobwebs in the mind and a scroll with blank paper to show that the true doctrine is not found in the scriptures but in the heart. It is said that Kanzan was the incarnation of th Bodhisattva called Fugen-bosatsu (Samantabhadra) and Jittoku was the incarnation of the
Bodhisattva Monju-bosatsu (Manjusri).

Kinko was a Chinese recluse of the Cho Dynasty who disappeared into the stream but returned after a long absence riding on a huge carp.

The subject is based on an interlude (kyogen) called "Konkai" (Fox Barkings). An old fox disguises itself as a monk called Hakuzosu. It visits Hakuzosu's nephew who is a hunter and dissuades him from laying out fox-trapping devices. On its way home the fox is however tragically caught in an old snare.
