The Actor Arashi Kitsusaburo II as the
Sumo Wrestler Hanaregoma Chokichi, 1823
The actor Arashi Kitsusaburo II was active during the period 1822-28 in the kamigata region. In this print he is in the role of the sumo wrestler Hanaregoma chokichi, in the play "Futatsu Chocho Kuruwa Nikki" ("Diary of Two Butterflies in Gay Quarter"). This play was performed at the Nakamura Kazuma theatre, Osaka, from the 14th day of the 11th month, 1823. The play featured the two wrestlers Hanaregoma Chokichi and Nuregami Chogoro (impersonated by he actor Asao Gakujuro I). Nuregami Chogoro was depicted on the bench in the accompanying right-hand sheet of the diptych.
