You should notify your professor(s) of any absence(s) from class. You must see the nurse the day of your absence if a class excuse is needed. The nurse will assess your health status and either send a class excuse to your professor(s) stating you are to be excused from class or a “requested day off” excuse. A “requested day off” excuse is used if the student does not meet the criteria for being excused from class, but is not feeling well enough to attend class. The professor(s) will then take into account the excuse and may accept it or not. It is extremely important to follow-up with your professor(s) regarding the missed class work from your excused day(s). The sick student may email the nurse once seen at the health center (and was given an excuse due to illness, not a “requested day off” excuse) for extended sick days, not to exceed three days. You will be asked to see a doctor if you are sick longer than three days. No further excuses will be given UNTIL you are seen by a doctor. The student may be seen by one of the doctors that come on campus or may make an appointment with an off-campus doctor. A written note should be obtained from the off-campus doctor if classes are missed.
Please attempt to schedule off-campus appointments (doctor, dentist, therapy, etc) around your class schedule or obtain a note when seen off campus. The nurse on campus will excuse you from class if there is written and DATED information about a recent medical need (example would be a visit to Urgent Care/Emergency Department).
A class excuse will not be given to a student for missing class in order to transport another student to an appointment (See Prescription and Transportation).
