Internships - How can I get academic credit for an internship?

There are two ways to earn academic credit for an internship at Lawrence; by registering for an already existing course or by submitting a petition to the Committee on Instruction. Students (who qualify under the guidelines of specific courses) may register for internship courses that are currently offered by departments or as university courses (students will need to make sure they meet any requirements set forth by the department). The following departments have course numbers for internships:

Students interested in earning academic credit from other departments will need to submit a petition to the faculty Committee on Instruction. Petitions for academic credit are due the fifth week of the term BEFORE the one in which you would like to complete the internship. These petitions are available from the Internship Coordinator, your faculty advisor and the Dean of Faculty's office. The following departments do not currently have course numbers for internships:

This does not have to be your faculty academic advisor, but should be a professor in a department most closely related to the focus of your internship, as credit will be granted from that department. For example, if you are seeking credit for an internship in marketing, you should seek out a faculty member from the area you will be marketing, perhaps Government if promoting a candidate in an election. When approaching a faculty member to ask if she or he will agree to support your internship, it is helpful to have the following information:
