The Center for Teaching and Learning hires faculty-approved tutors to work with students in a variety of disciplines. Assistance is available in most 100-level courses and many advanced-level courses. If a tutor is requested in a course for which no one has yet been hired, the Center for Teaching and Learning will attempt to locate an appropriate tutor as soon as possible.
Lawrence students may request a tutor at no charge. It is to your advantage to plan ahead and request a tutor in advance whenever possible.
We offer tutoring in the following areas:
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL tutoring is available to students who are non-native speakers of
English and want assistance with English language skills. The
Center for Teaching and Learning offers both ESL writing tutoring and
ESL oral communication tutoring.
Writing
Writing tutors are assigned to Freshman Studies sections and are also
available to help with writing for other classes (as well as for
scholarship essays, job applications, etc.). They can assist with
writing projects from the brainstorming stage through the final draft,
in addition to answering questions about organization, style,
proofreading, and appropriate documentation (citing sources).
A number of writing tutors have special training to better assist
non-native speakers of English. Please mention that you are an ESL
student when requesting an appointment if you wish to work with one of
these tutors.
Oral Communication
Oral communication tutors are trained to aid students with skills such as:
- Learning how to prepare questions for class discussions
- Developing, practicing, and critiquing presentations
- Developing listening skills
- Reducing communication anxiety ("stage fright")
- Working on pronunciation and fluency with ESL students
Communication tutors also offer workshops on topics including: using PowerPoint effectively, class discussion techniques, and intercultural communication.
Quantitative
Tutors trained in quantitative problem-solving skills are available for
all 100-level and many upper-level classes classified as meeting the
quantitative skills GER. These tutors can help with both general
critical thinking skills and specific concepts. They can assist students
one-on-one and also offer regular group study sessions geared to
assignments and exams in many of the quantitative skills courses offered
at Lawrence.
Additionally, quantitative tutors offer workshops at the beginning of
each term in areas such as word problems, graphing, and algebra.
Content
Content tutoring refers to assistance with the specific subject matter
in a course. Content tutors work one-on-one and in small groups to help
students understand the course material by explaining and demonstrating
concepts, reviewing topics, providing guidance through exercises,
answering questions, and clarifying ideas.
