Gustavo Fares is a native of Argentina. He holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master in Foreign Languages, a Master in Painting and Lithography from West Virginia University, and a J.D.Law Degree from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
As Professor of Spanish and Chairperson of the Spanish Department at Lawrence University his primary responsibilities include teaching all levels of the Spanish language and courses on Latin American literature and culture.
In addition, Dr. Fares advises students, participates in committees and task forces, and conducts scholarly research. Dr. Fares's research interests include the work of the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, Mexican literature and culture, contemporary Argentinean women writers, Latin American culture, and cultural and border studies.

Madera Allan holds a B.A. in Spanish from Reed College and an M.A. in Hispanic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, where she is completing a doctoral thesis on the relationship between eating and subjecthood in inquisitorial Spain. She has also studied at the Insituto Oriente in Mexico, the Université de Rennes II in France and the Torre del libro in Cuba.
Her research focuses on late medieval and early modern Spain, viewed through the lenses of: cultural studies, imperium studies, postcolonial theory, material culture, and ethics. She has taught language and culture courses at the University of Pennsylvania and Lawrence University and is excited to join the department full time in the fall of 2008.

Esther
Palomino is a graduate of the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha,
Spain with a Licenciatura en Filosofía y Letras. She is currently
a doctoral degree candidate in Comparative Literature at Purdue
University. The title of her dissertation is "The Influence
of William James's Philosophy in Miguel de Unamuno's Essays and
Fiction." She has published several articles on Peninsular
Spanish and Hispanic American literature, as well as on British
and US literatures. 
The topics of her research have ranged from the literature of exhaustion
in Borges and Barthes, semiotic theory applied to Chilean drama,
self-referentiality in Albee's plays, and Chicana lesbianism, to
the religious problem in Marlow and Calderón. She has also
presented papers at professional meetings on topics ranging from
Caribbean literature, Existentialisms, Kafka, Social Realism, and
Hardboiled fiction to Foreign Language pedagogy.

Rosa Tapia is a native of Spain. She holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from Penn State University, a M.A. in Spanish and Foreign Language Pedagogy from the University of Delaware, and a B.A. in English Philology from the University of Granada (Spain). Tapia teaches Spanish language, culture, literature and film, and she is also a Freshman Studies instructor and lecturer. She received the Lawrence University's Young Teacher Award in 2005.
Tapia’s research focuses on Spanish and Latin American fiction and cinema, and her professional interests include educational technology in foreign language instruction. Her publications include a book on contemporary Spanish fiction, as well as a number of journal articles and conference presentations on topics related to national identities, historical memory, gender studies and film.

Patricia
Vilches is a native of Viña del Mar, Chile. She received
her M.A. and Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from the
University of Chicago, with a dissertation emphasis on Spanish Golden
Age and Italian Renaissance, and other work related to Latin American
literature. The current focus of her publications is Latin American
female authors, such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Violeta
Parra, "la Violeta."
Vilches
also concentrates on Italian Renaissance literature, especially
the works of Niccolò Machiavelli. She has produced a
volume of short stories about Chile, entitled Karma desde el Mar (
Ediciones Documentas, 1992). Vilches is currently Associate Professor
of Spanish and Italian at Lawrence University, where her main duties
are teaching all levels of Spanish language and Latin American literature
and culture, Italian language, and participating in the Freshman
Studies program.
During the 2007-8 academic year she was the Visiting Faculty for the ACM Florence Program.
