Gustavo Fares is a native of Argentina. He holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master in Foreign Languages, a Master in Painting and Lithography from West Virginia University, and a J.D.Law Degree from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Prof. Fares teaches all levels of the Spanish language and courses on Latin American literature and culture. His research interests include the work of the Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, Mexican literature and culture, contemporary Argentinean women writers, Latin American culture, and cultural and border studies.

Patricia Vilches is a native of Viña del Mar, Chile. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from the University of Chicago, with a dissertation emphasis on Spanish Golden Age and Italian Renaissance, and other work related to Latin American literature.

Prof. Vilches also works on Italian Renaissance literature, especially the works of Niccolò Machiavelli. She has produced a volume of short stories about Chile, entitled Karma desde el Mar ( Ediciones Documentas, 1992). Vilches teaches Latin American literature and culture and Italian language courses.

20100907_7830.jpgRosa Tapia is a native of Spain. She holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature from Penn State University, a M.A. in Spanish and Foreign Language Pedagogy from the University of Delaware, and a B.A. in English Philology from the University of Granada (Spain). Tapia teaches Spanish language, culture, literature and film. She received the Lawrence University's Young Teacher Award in 2005.

Tapia’s research focuses on Spanish and Latin American fiction and cinema. Her scholarship includes a book on contemporary Spanish narrative, as well as journal articles and conference presentations on topics related to national identities, historical memory, gender studies and film.

Madera Allan holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Spanish from the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. in Spanish from Reed College. She has also studied at the Insituto Oriente in Mexico, the Université de Rennes II in France and the Torre del libro in Cuba. 

Her research focuses on late medieval and early modern Spain, viewed through the lenses of: cultural studies, imperium studies, postcolonial theory, material culture, and ethics. She teaches Spanish language and culture courses, as well as Freshman Studies.

Esther Palomino holds a Licenciatura en Filosofía y Letras from the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (Spain) and she did graduate work at Purdue University

The topics of her research have ranged from the literature of exhaustion in Borges and Barthes, semiotic theory applied to Chilean drama, self-referentiality in Albee's plays, and Chicana lesbianism, to the religious problem in Marlow and Calderón. She has also presented papers at professional meetings on topics ranging from Caribbean literature, Existentialisms, Kafka, Social Realism, and Hardboiled fiction to Foreign Language pedagogy. She has published several articles on Peninsular Spanish and Hispanic American literature, as well as on British and US literatures.

Cecilia Herrera is a native of Viña del Mar, Chile. She holds a B.A. in English and a M.A. in Spanish from the Universidad de Playa Ancha (Chile). Herrera teaches Spanish language courses at Lawrence and she has extensive experience working with immersion programs in the United States and abroad.
