This form of transportation, which is quite rare in the U.S., is common in Russian cities. As with buses and trolleybuses, people board trams at the middle or at the rear -- normally not at the front. Rather than paying when they enter, riders of the tram need to have tickets that they punch on the tram. Sometimes people will ride trams without a ticket, but when they do so they risk being fined.
