The purpose of this website is to provide students who are starting to learn Russian with a set of images associated with certain Russian words.* Rather than simply providing a list of vocabulary words in English and Russian, this site includes images and cultural explanations in English. In this way, it is hoped, students will start to become aware of mental associations that Russian speakers have with these words, rather than merely associating the Russian words with their English equivalents.

*This project is the creation of Professor Rebecca Matveyev, who passed away before its final revision, and Gretchen Revie, Reference Librarian/Assistant Professor at Lawrence University. The Midwest Instructional Technology Center and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation provided funding and support for the project, which was created in the MITC "Teaching and Learning with Technology in the Humanities" workshop in June 2003 at Lawrence University. Thanks to Anya Garibjana and Olia Shapel, who provided the audio files. Professor Matveyev's text has not been altered although some images have been replaced to address copyright issues.
