Many Russian families living in cities own a plot of land with a small house on it, located somewhere outside the city. The term "dacha" refers to both the plot of land and the house. Many families spend summer weekends at the dacha, taking care of the garden and relaxing in the fresh air. Dachas are often rather primitively equipped, without heating or indoor plumbing. In more recent years, some far larger and more elaborate dachas (referred to as "kottedzhi") have been built for "new Russians," the part of the country's population that struck it rich in the post-Soviet era.
