Russian Words and Images

Relatively few Russians, especially those living in large cities, have single-family houses. This word is used in reference not just to single family homes, but also to multi-story apartment buildings. Five-story apartment buildings, which were built during the Krushchev period, are generally not of very good quality, and the apartments tend to be small and cramped. Nine-story apartment buildings, many of which were built earlier, during the Stalin period, are sometimes of better quality, and the apartments tend to be larger, with high ceilings.
