For most Russian speakers, this word is associated with small cardboard containers of milk that contain virtually no preservatives. However, in more recent years it has become possible to purchase milk in hermetically sealed packets with a long shelf life (known as "Parmalat"). Unlike in the U.S., milk and other beverages, such as juice, are often not drunk straight from the refrigerator because of concerns that cold beverages can be dangerous to one's health, and in particular, bad for the throat. Skim milk is not a concept generally encountered in Russia. |
