Food

Russian diets tend to rely somewhat more on meat and somewhat less on fresh fruit and vegetables than the typical American diet. Many Russians also make considerable use of dairy products, including some that are not readily available in the U.S. (For example, “tvorog,” which, in consistency, is something like a cross between cottage cheese and cream cheese.) Russian food preparation also tends to be somewhat different from that in the U.S. Many Russians consume more fried food (e.g., fried potatoes) than many Americans.

In many Russian families, women are entirely responsible for food preparation, but that situation is changing somewhat in younger generations. The traditional practice of making three meals a day from scratch is changing somewhat, as more women use some pre-prepared foods. However, many Russian women still cook more frequently – and using somewhat fewer kitchen gadgets – than many American women. Most Russians tend to eat out considerably less frequently than many Americans.
