For most Russian speakers, this word is associated with uncut loaves of bread that contains virtually no preservatives. The experience of buying and consuming bread is also rather different in Russia than in the U.S. In Russia, bread can, of course, be purchased at grocery stores, but is also often bought in other settings, including kiosks. Most Russians keep bread in a breadbox, and buy it rather frequently -- almost on a daily basis -- unlike most Americans. And many Russians tend to eat bread with every meal: for example, as the basis for open-faced sandwiches at breakfast, and as an accompaniment to soup or vegetable/meat salads during lunch. White bread and black bread are both frequently eaten. |
