Russian stores have changed somewhat in the post-Soviet era. An increasing number of stores now offer Western-style goods at Western-style prices. The old system of buying merchandise in stores has also changed in many stores. In the Soviet period, purchasers needed to stand in three lines: one to say what they wanted to buy and find out the cost, a second to pay that amount, and a third to get the merchandise in exchange for the paid receipt. Now, in many stores, payment is tendered directly in exchange for goods. |
