Some of the pictures in this category are of free-standing buildings, such as churches, libraries, and the large department store known as “GUM.” However, some institutions that are normally free-standing buildings in the U.S. – such as post offices, pharmacies, and stores – are sometimes located on the first floor of large, multi-story apartment buildings in Russia.

Some cities, especially Moscow, are remarkable for their blend of architectural styles, in which centuries-old churches stand next to modern glass office buildings.
