We encourage our students who have completed two years of college Russian to study in Russia. Study abroad provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen your foreign language skill as well as your understanding and appreciation of another culture.

Lawrence sponsors its own exchange program with Kurgan University, located on the southwestern edge of Siberia. Participating students live with Russian families, a situation which provides an excellent opportunity for you to practice speaking the language on a constant basis and to become familiar with everyday life in Russia. Classes at the university are small, and are led by teachers trained specifically to teach Russian to foreigners.  The program includes cultural excursions within Kurgan, as well as longer trips to other Russian cities.

Students also have the option of enrolling in other programs.  The American Council of Teachers of Russian and the Council for International Educational Exchange sponsor various programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other Russian cities.  Bard College recently developed an exchange with the Smolny College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
