This mother is braiding her girl’s hair in front of her shop. “There is no such thing as having no time for doing your or your child’s hair” she said. In Turkey, there is a saying: “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones.” Women in Sierra Leone taught me that this is true. During my visit, I didn’t see one woman who didn’t like to look at the mirror. They do everything to see that the reflection is one of a beautiful woman. I saw girls braiding each others' hair as they waited for people to buy their products, women gathering at someone’s house for hair braiding and taking care of themselves, old women teaching the young ones natural recipes for beauty hints, and mothers showing little girls different braiding styles. Women share the privilege of being women without putting their poverty forward as an excuse.
