Mothers carrying babies on their backs is a common sight in Sierra Leone. It allows the mother to take care of her baby and do her work at the same time. Having a baby doesn’t change a woman’s routine responsibilities. Indeed, women are expected to continue their regular work and take care of their newborn. Therefore, women find their own ways of managing life with the resources they create. Babies seem calm being in constant physical contact with their mothers. Even though this practice is widely used in Sierra Leone, some Western views disagree with it being good for the child’s development. Most experts feel that babies need to experience acting on their environment as a part of their unfolding development.
