
The children are playing in a tide pool on an Atlantic Ocean beach. The life conditions in the villages are significantly different than in cities, especially compared with Freetown which hosts almost half of the country’s population. In terms of health issues, the differences do not reflect better conditions in the villages. Although the water and the environment in general look cleaner in the rural areas, the mortality rates for children and mothers giving birth is incredibly high, with malaria, measles, vitamin A deficiency and worm infestation the most dangerous health conditions.
