This is a Refugee Camp in Kenema, Sierra Leone. A child is wandering around aimlessly during a time that could be used as school time, but there is no established school in the camp.
Throughout the conflict in Sierra Leone during the 1990’s, thousands of refugees fled from Sierra Leone to Liberia to escape the civil war. However, Liberia too had gone through a devastating civil war which killed hundreds of thousands of people. Almost 3 million Liberians fled their homes to surrounding countries including Sierra Leone. The majority of these people returned to Liberia, but many have decided not to return since their country continues to be unstable.
This refugee camp houses mostly Liberian refugees and some Sierra Leonean returnees. The number of refugees in the camp has decreased from 10.000 to 3000. A lot of money was spent to build schools, rehabilitation, skills training, health centers and playgrounds for children. However, the buildings and playgrounds are deteriorating from not being used. And most significantly, the children are not getting any education.
