


Class Scheduling Rules & Guidelines
A. Class Periods
- A standard course must be scheduled using a regular class period (
a course valued at less than 6 units may use less than the full class period).
Class periods are defined as follows:
Monday-Wednesday-Friday (three 70-minute sessions)
- 8:30-9:40 a.m.
- 9:50-11:00 a.m.
- 11:10 a.m.-12:20 p.m.
- 12:30-1:40 p.m.
- 1:50-3:00 p.m.
- 3:10-4:20 p.m.
Tuesday-Thursday (two 110-minute sessions)
- 9:00-10:50 a.m.
- 12:30-2:20 p.m.
- 2:30-4:20 p.m.
- A course with a fourth or fifth session each week must be scheduled
using one or more of the following times for the additional sessions:
Tuesday, Thursday, or both (70-minute sessions)
- 8:30-9:40 a.m.
- 9:50-11:00 a.m.
- 3:10-4:20 p.m.
The fourth or fifth sessions do not have to be held at the same time as the
primary class period used for the class section.

A course with a laboratory session, must be scheduled using one or the
following times for the laboratory:
Tuesday or Thursday (three hours)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday (three hours)
- Departments or instructors who wish to schedule courses at times that
do not meet the requirements in 1-3, must obtain the approval of
the Committee on Instruction.
B. Convocation Hour (11:10 a.m. – 12:20 p.m., TR)
- The convocation hour remains a reserved hour and not available as a regular class meeting time.
Classes originally scheduled as ‘arranged’, may be assigned to a classroom and scheduled for 11:10 TR
if that is the time that is arranged and the class meeting is canceled when convocations occur.
- Procedures for music studios that traditionally meet at this time will be worked out in
consultation between the Committee on the Curriculum and the Committee on Instruction.
C. 3:10 MWF
Music ensembles will be scheduled at this time. All academic departments are responsible
for complying with the rule that courses required for a major may not be scheduled during
this period unless another class session of the course is also offered at another class
period in the same term.
D. Final Exam Schedule
- The 2006-07 Academic Calendar will stand as published.
- Beginning with 2007-08, the winter term final examination reading period
(Monday of exam week) will be eliminated and exams will start on Monday.
- The final exam schedule will be based on the standard class periods.
Final examinations for classes scheduled as arranged or permitted to meet at
odd times will continue to be arranged by the instructor during exam week at a
time convenient to all students in the class.
- There will continue to be four days devoted to final examinations. To accommodate
the new class period, three exams (starting at 8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m.)
will be scheduled on the first day of final examination week. Two exams (8:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m.)
will be scheduled on the remaining three examination days.
- Automatic approval of request to change final examination times will continue to be
given to students with three examinations in a row. Three in a row is defined as
- morning-afternoon-morning or afternoon-morning-afternoon on
any two consecutive examination days
- morning-afternoon-evening on the first day of exams
- afternoon-evening-morning beginning on the first day of exams
- evening-morning-afternoon beginning on the first day of exams
