Description: An examination of the role of international organizations (IOs) in world politics, focusing on both the historical development and the contemporary functions of the United Nations and other IOs in regard to the promotion of international peace and security. Attention is also given to the role of IOs in regard to global issues such as peacekeeping, humanitarian intervention, and environmental protection and to regional organizations, especially the European Union. As part of the course, students will participate in a simulation of the United Nations. PREREQUISITES: GOVT 140, GOVT 340, or consent of instructor

Topic for Fall 2015: Leadership and Coalition Building
This seminar explores political leadership and coalition building from the perspective of strategic theories of politics. We will critically explore this approach using applications from such areas as congressional politics, the presidency, and to a lesser extent judicial politics, parliamentary politics, and international relations. This seminar is a good choice for students wishing to complete a senior experience paper on American politics.



Topic for Winter 2016: Causes of Terrorism
Starting from the assumption that terrorism is a strategy worth understanding, this course investigates explanations from a variety of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. Students will complete a substantial research project that satisfies the Government department’s senior experience requirement.



Topic for Spring 2016: Comparative Politics
This seminar is intended to help students conceptualize and complete a senior experience project. Readings from comparative politics and international relations will be used to model the various stages of, and approaches to, conducting research.

Description: Politicians and prognosticators have increasingly turned to “Big Data”, futures markets, and poll aggregation to predict political outcomes. The course will explore the theory and accuracy of these quantitative predictions, discuss contemporary issues of data quality, and suggest whether quantitative analysis of politics is more than entertainment for political junkies.
