Lawrence University has revised its credit scale. Beginning with the 2001 fall term, course credit will be identified in units. The course catalog and class schedule for the 2001-02 academic year will display both the old credit value and new unit value for each course. Until the conversion of academic records to the new computer system is complete, transcripts and other reports showing course information will display credit in the old format.
This change will allow us to report credit and point in decimal, rather than fraction, format and make it easier for recipients of transcripts and other documents to interpret the academic work completed by Lawrence students.
We ask members of the campus community to use the term "credit" to refer to the old format, and "units" to refer to the new format in order to clarify communication and reduce problems during student registration.
Please Note: This change in scale does affect the conversion of Lawrence work into semester or quarter hours. Under the old credit system 1 term course credit is the equivalent of 3.3 semester hours or 5 quarter hours. Under the new system 1 term course credit becomes 6 units, which is still the equivalent of 3.3 semester hours or 5 quarter hours. The smallest unit of credit under the old system is 1/6; the smallest unit of credit under the new system is 1.
