Guidelines for the Design and Printing of University Publications
These guidelines are to be used in the design and printing of Lawrence University publications. University publications are to be printed in Central Services unless the production specifications of the job dictates the use of an outside vendor. The audience for and purpose of the publication will determine the extent to which a design that requires such outside printing will be pursued.
1- or 2-Color Publications
Central Services printing is routinely expected on these publications.
- Brochures, booklets, flyers, and other printed material intended for on-campus usage and internal audiences
- Posters and announcements publicizing speakers, concerts, events, and other campus activities to the Lawrence community and general public
- Standard invitations and reply cards for campus events
- Forms, handbooks, and directories
- Letterhead, business cards, and envelopes
- Internal campus newsletters or departmental newsletters aimed at a narrow audience
3-Color Cover With 1- or 2-Color Internal Copy
The cover will normally be outsourced but the internal body of the publication will usually be printed in Central Services, along with collating and binding. The use of 3-color covers should be avoided unless the publication meets the following standard.
- Brochures, flyers, and other printed material targeted principally at an external audience or used for the promotion of programs or events where revenue, attendance, or enrollment is a serious consideration
Embossed Covers or Other Specialized Printing
Certain publications, because of the specialized nature of the paper, printing, or binding employed or the time urgency involved, will regularly require outsourcing. These include
- Commencement programs and announcements, Honors Day program, and publications used in conjunction with other significant ceremonial occasions of the college
- Invitations, event programs, or specialized note cards for high profile fundraising or donor cultivation activities
- Publications such as the University Course Catalog, Report on Giving, etc., that because of their size, binding, or paper require external printing
Full 3- or 4-Color Publications
These publications almost always require outsourcing. Full 3-color or 4-color printing and design is mainly limited to the major institutional publications of the college, including
- Publications that represent the college to external audiences and promote the prestige and general reputation of the institution such as core student recruitment materials (Admissions viewbooks, etc.), Lawrence Today, and significant fundraising appeals and donor publications
