APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University's Sam Laes has been chosen as the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week.
Laes, a sophomore from Green Bay, Wis., went 3-0 on the week to improve his season record to 9-1 at 165 pounds.
A former standout at Ashwaubenon High School, Laes started his week with a 12-2 win over Seth Hendricks of UW-Eau Claire on Dec. 11.
At the Lawrence Double Dual on Dec. 15, Laes defeated Pat Nagel of UW-Whitewater 8-7 and then pinned Scott Ison of the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 2:33. It was Laes' second pin of the season.
Laes, who posted a team-best 20-11 record as a freshman, is the first Viking to be chosen as the WIAC Wrestler of the Week since Lawrence joined the conference in 2003.
Lawrence returns to action on Dec. 28 when it wrestles in the Sunshine Open in Lakeland, Fla.
