Six Vikings named to all-conference football team

APPLETON, Wis. -- Six Lawrence University football players have been named to the All-Midwest Conference team.

Junior Derek Micke (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna) and sophomore Matt Frelich (Maribel, Wis./Denmark) were both named to the second team. Senior Jack Peters (Shiocton, Wis./Shiocton), junior Jeremy Reider (Appleton, Wis./North), sophomore Kevin Penza (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon), and freshman Kyle Gauthier (Brillion, Wis./Kaukauna) all received honorable mention.

Micke, who made the switch from defense to wide receiver at midseason, was named to the all-conference team for the third consecutive season. Micke was a second-team selection as a return specialist for the second straight year. He was a second-team pick on defense in 2005. In conference play, Micke returned five kickoffs, including one for a touchdown, and had a 34.2-yard average. He also returned 12 punts and had a 9.0-yard average. Despite playing only five games on offense, Micke caught 19 passes for 387 yards, a 20.4-yard average, and four touchdowns. On the season, He had 27 catches for 506 yards and six scores.

Frelich, a defensive end, was a second-team pick after receiving honorable mention in 2006. Frelich piled up 50 tackles, including 17 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks, in conference play. He led the league in sacks and was second in tackles for loss. Only one defensive lineman in the league finished with more tackles than Frelich. On the season, Frelich was fourth on the team with 53 tackles and led the squad with 18 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks. Frelich already ranks seventh in Lawrence history with 12.0 sacks. Frelich also blocked a league-best four kicks, setting Lawrence season and career records in the process, forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble, and had a pass breakup.

Reider, a defensive tackle, received honorable mention for the third consecutive season. He finished the season with 36 tackles, including three for loss and 0.5 sacks. Reider also had an interception return for a touchdown against Illinois College and recovered a fumble.

Peters, a defensive end, received honorable mention for the second time in his career after being selected in 2005. He finished with 45 tackles, including 12 for loss and 2.0 sacks. He also had two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and a pass breakup.

Penza, a linebacker, was given honorable mention for the second straight season. He finished eighth in the conference with 79 tackles and had a team-high 90 tackles on the season. Penza had 12 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. He also forced two fumbles and recovered another.

Gauthier, a cornerback, was one of only 10 freshman named to the all-conference team. He led the team with three interceptions and seven pass breakups. Gauthier finished with 10 tackles, including two for loss.

Lawrence finished the season with a 4-6 record, including a 4-5 mark in league play.
